5 Heated Tips for Staying Warm in the Winter

In the US, the record low temperature was -80 degrees in Alaska. While temperatures in your area may not even get close to that, that doesn’t mean winters there are any less brutal.

Yes, you can turn your heater on once the temperatures drop, but what else can you do?

Here are 5 tips for staying warm in the winter!

1. Have Your Boiler Serviced

Without a working boiler, it can be difficult (if not impossible) to stay warm during the winter. So before the colder weather arrives, make sure you have a professional look at it and perform boiler repair if necessary.

A working boiler ensures that you’re not overworking your indoor heating. Not only does this shorten the lifespan of your HVAC system, but it also drives up your utility bills.

2. Wear Layers

One of the best ways to ward off the cold is to wear warm clothing. Not only that, but you should layer your clothing!

Start with a good polyester or silk undershirt and long underwear. Then, wear a thin long-sleeved shirt over that, and then a thick sweater.

Don’t forget to wear a hat and thick socks as well, since you lose heat through your head and feet. A fleece neck warmer can be nice too.

3. Use a Hot Water Bottle

A hot water bottle is a cheap and easy way to crank the heat. Just fill it with very hot water (not boiling!), put the cover on it, and then set it on your lap. You can even put a blanket over yourself to keep the heat in.

If you feel like your bed or couch isn’t warm enough, you can also leave a hot water bottle under the blanket/throw blanket a little before you get in bed or watch TV. That way, the iciness is gone!

However you use a hot water bottle, the heat will last for hours, which makes it a cost-effective way to get warm fast.

4. Block Off Drafts

A house that’s not sealed well will let cold drafts in, which can lower the inside temperature. You should weather-strip your windows, stuff towels or blankets at the bottom of your door, and put long narrow pillows at the bottom of your windowsills.

If you’re finding it hard to keep your downstairs areas hot, try hanging a blanket at the stairwell. Heat rises, but if you block off the pathway for air to get upstairs, you can manage to keep the downstairs part of your house warmer.

5. Bake More

This tip helps you in two ways: not only do you have something warm to munch on after you’re done, but you’ll also heat up the area more!

During the winter, consider making more baked meals so you can keep your oven running longer without wasting too much energy.
