Family Legacy

Atlas Tool Works, Inc has been in the Mottl family for four generations. Atlas was founded in 1918 and provides a wide variety of metal processing and manufacturing services.

The first Mottl to own Atlas was Jerome. Jerome Mottl was the owner in the early 1920s. He left the business to his son Irvin, who died shortly after inheriting the company. This left the business in the hands of his widow, Rose.

Rose Mottl was Zach’s grandmother, and she is the source of his dedication and hardworking nature. As one of the very few women in the manufacturing industry at the time, she was forced to become persistent. Zach reports that she often found herself frustrated, but she never gave in to the desire to quit.

From this obstinance, Zach found inspiration to never give up. By the time he took over as the Chief Alignment Officer, this attitude he learned from his grandmother had served him well throughout his life.

Dan Mottl, Zach’s father, is still the president of the company. Zach’s sister Hilary works as a mechanical engineer and was the recipient of the Rose Mottl award for her persistence in challenging situations. Zach’s other sister Althea works as the head of HR.

The challenges they face these days deal with a highly skilled generation on the brink of retirement. Now, they are trying to find the next generation of skilled, domestic workers for the company. Most companies outsource to China, but Zack Mottl says this isn’t an option for Atlas Tool.
