A Guide to Removing Bed Bugs From Your Home

Pests are a major problem in America (and the rest of the world). When they get into the home, not only do they ruin our comfort and enjoyment of our houses, but they create some serious health concerns as well.

Unfortunately, pest infestations are very common. More than 14 million housing units have reported seeing roaches and/or rats and mice in the last 12 months.

And while no pests are good, some are worse than others. Home bed bugs are definitely one of the worst pests you can encounter. And removing bed bugs isn’t an easy task.

So how can you tell if you have bed bugs? And if you have bed bugs, what are some bed bug removal tips to save your home? Keep reading below to find out now.

Where Do Bedbugs Come From?

Bed bugs are tiny. You’ll probably never see them. But if they get into your home and into your bed, they can reproduce very quickly and make your life very miserable.

Bed bugs are travelers. To get into your house, they will travel with you. If you buy used furniture from a home or store that was infested, the bed bugs may hitch a ride that way.

They can also come with your luggage if you stay at a house or hotel that had bed bugs. That’s why you should always take care when traveling and should wash everything immediately upon arrival back at home to avoid ever dealing with them in the first place.

How do you know if you have bed bugs? They like living inside mattresses. And they like to consume blood. If you wake up with welts or rashes on your skin every day, then you probably have a bed bug problem.

Removing Bed Bugs from the Home

If your bed bug infestation is very bad, or if you want to solve the problem as fast as possible, you should hire a residential pest control company that can take care of the issue all at once.

There are a few types of bed bugs that feed on people, but bed bug treatment options are pretty much the same across the board. Here’s how to get rid of bed bugs on your own, if you have the patience to try.

Clear Clutter

Bed bugs, like all bugs, thrive when there is clutter in the home. If you have piles of clothes or other belongings in your rooms, this provides bugs a chance to travel and reproduce.

Remove clutter and keep the floor and other surfaces as clean as possible.

Heat Treatment

Heat is the most effective method of killing bed bugs. That’s why clothing or smaller items should be run through a dryer on the highest heat setting to ensure bed bugs are dead.

For larger items that can’t fit into a dryer, consider a steam cleaner. You can use these on mattresses, carpets, soft suitcases, and any other softer items that could house bed bugs.

Mattress Covers

If you don’t yet use a mattress cover, now can be a great time to start. They protect your mattress from the damage of all kinds, such as spills.

They can also trap bed bugs inside and eventually kill them.

Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite

Removing bed bugs from your house can be a tricky process, especially if they’ve been around for a while and infested numerous items in your house, such as beds, couches, and carpets.

But if you catch an infestation early on, it can be much easier to treat on your own.
