Did you know that the global skincare market is expected to grow to over $145 billion by 2028?

But what’s driving this industry? Well, there are always new skincare fads promising they’ll help you get smooth, healthy skin. Just take a look at the skincare section at your local CVS or Walgreens and you’ll see why this is a booming business.

But many of these products do work—it’s just a matter of finding the right ones for your personal needs. But how should you build your skincare routine to get smoother skin?

We’re here to help! We’ve pulled together a few tips from four leading dermatologists to help you on your skincare journey.

1. Make Sure You’re Getting Your Vitamins

Skincare is more than just preventing blemishes. If you want to get smooth, healthy skin, you have to take care of your entire body. After all, the skin is an organ—the body’s biggest organ!

Remember that your diet can have an impact on the quality of your skin. There’s a lot of back-and-forth when it comes to foods that cause breakouts. However, dermatologists have mostly agreed that sugary foods and high-glycemic foods cause breakouts more frequently.

Dr. Debra Jaliman, a nutrition and skincare expert, recommends foods that are high in antioxidants, as they slow down the aging process. She also encourages extra fruits and veggies that are high in hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.

2. Schedule Laser Acne Removal

The word “laser” might sound frightening, but laser acne removal is a well-regarded practice in the dermatology world. Dr. Robert Anolik, a specialist in laser acne removal at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York, explains it best.

Anolik explains that picosecond lasers have rapid-fire technology that works to essentially break apart acne scars. Furthermore, the process also triggers collagen production.

There are several types of laser acne removal that are a great option if you haven’t had much luck with topicals. It’s a low-pain process that leads to long-lasting results.

3. Be Careful When Mixing Products

While skincare products can seem like the best way to get baby-smooth skin, they can be counterproductive if mixed improperly. Some products don’t interact well with others and might actually make your skin worse.

When mixing products, be sure to do your research or speak with a dermatologist. To get smoother skin by using topicals, Dr. Marchbein recommends a mix of SPF with retinol to keep skin wrinkle-free and well-moisturized.

4. Don’t Skip the Sunscreen

Dr. Anna Guanche is well-known for her work as a dermatologist with many Hollywood celebrities. She’s recommended various products to try, but there’s one she emphasizes is a must for everyone.

Guanche has repeated many times that sunscreen is an essential product for keeping skin smooth and healthy. She advises wearing sunscreen every day, even if they don’t plan on going outside. Yep—UV light can cause damage even if you’re inside or if it’s cloudy!

Along with preventing things like skin cancer, sunscreen also prevents wrinkle development. Be sure to look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Non-comedogenic sunscreens that won’t clog pores are ideal for people with oily or combination skin.

Get Smoother Skin and Shine

It certainly takes time and persistence to make your face smooth and pimple free. However, through a bit of trial and error, it’s totally possible. With the professional tips above, you’ll have a better idea of how to get smoother skin on your own!
